Why We Train

Why We Train

A training hike into the Hyndman Basin
with Rhonda, Michelle and Troy Sorensen

After cancelling last summer due to a broken foot and surgery, I started training at the gym and on the bike. I am a little behind on my training hikes this spring due to a bike race I signed up for. However we are training now for a 12 day hike in the Alps from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland on the  Walker's Haute Route.

Four couples will be traveling together, averaging 10K of distance and more than 1000m of elevation gain each day.

In preparation we have have been taking day hikes in the foothills of Boise. But this weekend we took a pulse on our readiness by taking a 12 mile hike, climbing nearly 3,800' into the Pioneer mountains to a basin surrounded by Hyndman Pk, Old Hyndman, and Cobb Pk.

The grandeur of creation with great friends is why we train.

Looking back towards Sun Valley and the remains of the moon.

I wasn't feeling the love at this point. Lack of sleep, stress, last week's heel blister not healed, all added up to a sluggish first three miles. However, a short rest, some food, water and vitamin I and I started to get a bounce back in my steps.
