LE Châble - Cabane du Mont Fort

The hotel in Le Châble fed us a great breakfast. Joan says the croissant was the best so far. Our destination tonight is our first mountain hut, Cabane du Mont Fort. The first of two in a row. We may have used some mechanized assistance  to get us up the 1636 meters. The gondola's first stop was half way at Verbier, the more famous Swiss ski resort. Similar to Sun Valley or Whistler, only on steroids.

There was some shopping involved. After my mid morning cappuccino I found a small shop that sold Swiss Army knives. I have wanted a special edition for picnic and alpine meals. One with a serrated blade for salami, bread, veggies and a cheese blade. It has to have a cork screw of course. I've searched the web and could have bought it before this trip, but it is just possible I may want to give it to a grandson in the future. It should mean more if it came directly from Switzerland and not Amazon Prime.

At the end of the service lift we traversed the mountain for 1 1/2 hours and up to a knoll where the hut was perched. It had awesome views of the valley we passed through the day before. We enjoyed refreshments on the deck while watching para-gliders catch thermals above the ski area.

The hut is operated by the Club Alpine Swiss (CAS) and there is one overworked hut 'warden' who is a waiter, washer, cleaner, cook, receptionist, maintenance, et al. He serves those staying the night as well as day hikers in need or want of a lunch and drink.

We were assigned 2 couples to a room, but after dinner there were vacant chambers and each couple had there own. However there were shared wash rooms for all the guests and if you have 10 Franks and 4 minutes to spare you could take a shower.

Dinner of bread, soup, salad, spaghetti and pudding desert was adequate but filling. After dinner some of us sat on the deck, now vacant of the day guests, and watched the sun set behind the mountains.

We are starting to recognize others on the same journey: a couple from Sweden, another from England, a single young man from China and two couples from the US. We all debated the route for tomorrow and then settled into our dorms for the night.
