Warm Showers

The Riverside Motel was, is a motel from a generation ago. Simple yet  comfortable and clean. Quite quaint. We slept well and were rested. We found a bike route out of Hayward to start our longer day. There were only a couple stops along the way. The day seemed to speed by. I can’t complain about the roads or traffic. Next thing we know we are 69 miles in and at the home of our Warm Showers hosts. Jeanne and Dan have a lovely home on Butternut Lake. They built it to accommodate long weekends with their four granddaughters. Retired dairy farmers, they enjoy world travel and cycling. Dan also has hobbies of which I am in awe. He brews his own beer and vints  his own wine. He was baking sourdough bread as we arrived and in the morning I get to experience bistro inspired coffee from his manual espresso maker. He is a Renaissance man. Dan is my new hero.

Jeanne fixed a delicious dinner of beef ribs, fresh salad from the garden, green beans picked only minutes earlier,  Dan’s fresh bread, and cauliflower.
Jeanne and Dan are our first experience using Warm Showers hosts. They have set the bar high. When we return home I have a learning curve in order to be a worthy Warm Showers host.

We are refreshed, relaxed and our hearts our full.

  1. Wow ~ they have set the bar high! I'm curious about so many things.... how do you find the 'Warm Shower' hosts? Do you let them know ahead of time what day you plan to be there? How much advanced notice? (Because I know things do not always go as planned!) Do you pay them for the food (amazing dinner) they provide? This seems like such a great idea, and I can only imagine you and Rhonda paying it forward to future cyclists traveling through our area!
We look forward to seeing your updates every day. We will be heading up to Ponderosa to go camping July 18 - 24 and may not have good wifi to catch up with each daily post, but know we will be thinking of you while we are there. (The place where you first met!) Mark is looking forward to a few road bike rides in the area if it is not too smoky and hot.

  3. And we are headed up to Sandpoint and then taking the three youngest in the Hiawatha trail with lots of water fun at the water park at Silver Mt Resort. Then Briabpn and I will head home on Weds with a couple hour ride in trail of the Coeur D’Alene. Will be thinking of you!
