Heart of Vilas Trail System

Jeanne and Dan have a quiet home and sleep came fast and hard. My alarm was the unmistakable sound of hot steam being forced, at exactly the correct pressure measured in bars, through finely ground home roasted coffee beans. Soon the velvety crema passed over my lips and across my taste buds and the day came alive.

Dan and I were the only ones up. We talked about his volunteer work through the lake association to monitor water quality on the lake.  I noticed the Secchi Disc in his boat alongside a temperature probe. I recalled my early years in South Dakota as a fishery tech using a Secchi Disc to measure water turbidity. Dan and his fellow volunteers do the work to monitor lake water quality in partnership with WI DNR. It would be nearly impossible for the state to do this work on the thousands of lakes that cover WI.

Soon others awoke and Dan began to create blueberry pancakes from scratch. The flower is locally sourced from friends in southern Wisconsin. The blueberries are grown in Jeanne’s berry garden and the maple syrup is tapped from their own, or their daughter’s maple trees. Our bellies and hearts filled once again, it was time to say goodbye to our new friends. Be well Jeanne and Dan. You have a place to stay whenever you come through Boise.

We started pedaling county roads, up and down and up. Not as many hills as yesterday. After 30ish miles we landed in Mercer and sat down at a diner. I already miss Dan and Jeanne’s home cooking.

The route led us unto amazing bike trails that took us to the Manitowish Waters. The Heart of the Vilas Trail System are some of the best bike trails I know of. We meandered through forest and river front for another 30 miles. It was pure joy.

Before we knew it, we found our camp at Camp Holiday just outside Boulder Junction. Camp is set, showers have been taken and supper awaits.

  1. Speaking of "No Name" street, did you find a horse? Looks like you two(three) are having a wonderful time. After looking at the strava map with all the lakes scattered around on it, I just realized after all these years why it's so humid back there. DUH! Continuing to pray for a safe and exciting adventure for you two. Thankful your dad is feeling better. Blessings to you two.
